Isle of Skye – Scottish charm

Isle of Skye – Scottish charm

Earlier this year we had spontaneously planned a European adventure with two of our close friends over a cup of coffee while day dreaming about the possibilities the future could hold, CLICK HERE to read more about that!

We had spent weeks mapping out where we wanted to go, booking lodging and buying tickets to get from place to place. We decided to rent a car for the first 8 days of our adventure. That proved to be an adventure all on it’s own – driving on the wrong side of the car and the road came with it’s own challenges. All I will say is that I covered my eyes more than once! Thank goodness I wasn’t driving or we wouldn’t have made it through the first roundabout!

Things rarely go to plan and traveling is no exception, especially internationally… It was 3am on the morning that we were set to leave and I received an email from Icelanair letting us know that our second flight would be delayed 8 hours or so. That was a bit frustrating since we had planned to get in to Glasgow, Scotland at 11am with a full day of driving north to the Isle of Skye. We had found gorgeous spots along the way that we wanted to stop at. However, after a mess of a travel day we didn’t leave the airport in Glasgow until just before dark. We were exhausted and nervous about figuring out how to get to the Isle of Skye in the dark.. Between Ryan almost crashing in our first roundabout and Ernest trying to mull over every deer in the road, it was quite a late night adventure after a day with no sleep.

Needless to say, at 3am (after 28 hours of travel) we arrived in Portree  – a small town on the Isle of Skye that we planned to spend two nights. We had booked the Pink Guesthouse, a lovely B&B right on the harbor.

After finishing breakfast we set out for a day of exploring the Isle. We found a route that would take us on a loop along the coast of the northern part of the island. OH MY! it was absolutely breathtaking!! The rolling hills were a a rich color of green that I don’t often see,,, The majestic vastness of the cliffs that towered above the ocean was humbling.

Later in the afternoon we headed to Glenbrittle to a hike that Julia and I had found that we were very excited about. During our research we had found numerous photos of a this gorgeous place we just had to visit… The Fairy Pools was a gorgeous hike that walked toward to vast mountains and ran along a river. In the river there were numerous small waterfalls and at the base of them were calm pools of still clear water.

The diverse landscapes were amazing! The rich greens and deep browns were both equally as gorgeous! Isle of Skye - Scottish charm 9There were sheep and lambs everywhere!

I could easily spend a week or more exploring the Isle and I hope one day I am able to return!
